Grade 1A – Signs & Symbols (2014-15)

29th January, 2015

During the class unit on signs, pupils were encouraged to think about shapes and colours used on signs that they see in everyday life before creating their own imaginary signs that express their own rules and preferences. We looked at the hieroglyphs of Ancient Egypt and asked pupils to try to create their own symbolic alphabet.

And after exploring how simple images relating to the animal and natural world are used as symbols to tell stories and represent various concepts in Native American and Australian Aboriginal cultures, pupils made some symbols of their own. Then using foam board cut out and glued onto a wooden backing, individual stamps were made that could have paint applied to it and be used to print the pupils’ symbols multiple times.
