Grade 4 did a short activity taking 3 pieces of cut up maps and sticking them to a white background. They then had to test their colour mixing skills to blend the fragments together and create the map of a larger imaginary land. For the simple machines unit, students looked at the mechanics of old style machines and artworks that were made based on industrial machine technology. Taking inspiration from the abstracted features seen in African tribal masks, students used a face mask as the basis for collages and prints that also worked with concepts of symmetry, balance and positive and negative space.
