Learning Languages by Living Them: Romance Language Evening at BCS

Effective language learning goes far beyond grammar rules and vocabulary lists.

From a pedagogical perspective, students learn a language most deeply when they encounter it as part of a living culture — through music, food, stories, and shared experiences. It is in these moments that language becomes meaningful, memorable, and truly their own.

The Romance Language Evening at Berlin Cosmopolitan School’s City Campus on April 23rd was a vivid example of this approach in action.

Language as a Living Experience

For two hours, the third floor of the City Campus turned into a cultural space celebrating the achievements of students in French and Spanish.

The event brought together families, teachers, and students to experience language not as an abstract subject, but as something vibrant and tangible.

Music, Food, and Expression

A central highlight was a student concert, where French chansons and Spanish rhythms filled the room.

Music, as research in language pedagogy consistently shows, plays a key role in developing pronunciation, rhythm, and emotional connection to a language. Equally engaging was the culinary aspect: guests were invited to enjoy a taste of France and Spain, discovering how closely language is tied to everyday life and traditions.

Creative Learning in Practice

Creative student videos offered further insight into the learning process, combining language skills with storytelling and digital creativity.

A particularly proud moment was the announcement that a video created by Grade 8 Spanish students has reached the final round of the Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen — a significant achievement that highlights both linguistic competence and creative expression.

Discovering the Francophone and Hispanophone Worlds

In addition, an exhibition on French- and Spanish-speaking countries invited visitors to explore cultural diversity across the Francophone and Hispanophone worlds.

Videos from the Grade 9 trips to Nice and Málaga added authentic perspectives, showing how language skills come alive when students engage directly with different environments and communities.

More Than a Language Lesson

The Romance Language Evening made one thing clear: when students sing, taste, present, and experience, they are not just learning a language — they are stepping into another world.

It is precisely this holistic, immersive approach that turns language learning into a lasting and transformative experience.

A heartfelt thank you goes to our teachers from the Romance Language Department for their dedication, creativity, and care in organising such an inspiring event.
