Celebrating Language, Culture, and Community: Romance Language Night at BCS
On Thursday, May 15, the third floor of our City Campus transformed into a vibrant celebration of French and Spanish language and culture. With music echoing through the halls, the scent of crêpes and guacamole in the air, and laughter from students and parents alike, our Romance Language Night was a joyful reminder of the power of language to connect people across cultures and generations.
Students from Grades 6 to 10 played a key role in organizing the evening, supported by some of our talented Grade 11 musicians on the guitar. We were especially pleased to welcome Grade 5 students, who will begin learning French or Spanish next year – a perfect opportunity to get inspired by their older peers.
Highlights of the evening included:
A moving French concert by Melinee Benamou, our French Club teacher, accompanied by her accordion.
Stirring performances of “Tango” and “Bella Ciao” by BCS students and visiting Spanish students on the guitar, adding a personal and international flair.
Waffles and guacamole were a hit, sold by our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to help fund next year’s school trips to France and Spain.
Poster exhibitions by Grade 7 highlighted famous figures and key facts from French- and Spanish-speaking countries.
Grade 8 students presented the creative videos they submitted to the Bundeswettbewerb Fremdsprachen – with the Spanish video selected to receive an official prize on Tuesday, May 20!
Grade 9 students shared reflections and video memories from their recent school trips to Málaga and Nice, offering insights into the exchange programs.
Grade 10 students ran interactive language workshops, including a hands-on lesson in French food vocabulary – complete with a delicious crêpe at the end!
Grade 6 students showcased their Olympic-themed posters and videos, including sports commentary recorded in French and Spanish, as young multilingual journalists.
This festive evening was not only a celebration of language learning at BCS, but also a beautiful demonstration of student initiative, creativity, and collaboration.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to:
- Our kitchen team for the delicious food and drinks
- The music department for technical support and performance coordination
- All the students, teachers, and families who helped make the night such a memorable success
Merci – ¡Gracias – Thank you!
