¡Hola Málaga! – A Week of Language, Culture, and Discovery

What does it feel like to step out of the classroom and straight into real Spanish life?

For our Grade 9 Spanish students, the answer began the moment they landed in Málaga — with a warm “¡Bienvenidos!” from their host families and the irresistible aroma of a home-cooked Spanish dinner. From that first evening, it was clear: this was going to be a week to remember.

The next day invited students to truly vivir el idioma — to live the language.

Immersed in family life, they experienced everyday Spanish culture firsthand. An afternoon at the cinema, watching a film in Spanish, turned listening into an adventure. Suddenly, Spanish was no longer just a subject, but a living, breathing experience.

The academic week began with a visit to Sunny View School, where connections with local students brought new perspectives and new friendships.

Later, under the Andalusian sun, a picnic at Muelle Uno and a bike ride along the sparkling Mediterranean coast made learning feel like pure freedom — ¡qué maravilla!

Art and history took centre stage the following day.

At the Museo Picasso Málaga, students traced the footsteps of a creative genius before stepping even further back in time at the majestic Alcazaba of Málaga. Wandering through ancient walls and sunlit courtyards, one could almost hear echoes of the past.

And then — lo mejor del día — a stop for churros dipped in rich, velvety chocolate.

The next day, the group headed into the Andalusian mountains, where olive trees stretch across the landscape like a silver-green sea.

Here, students learned how olives become olive oil and then stepped into the kitchen themselves: chopping, stirring, tasting — ¡qué rico! Preparing tortilla de papas and gazpacho became a delicious lesson in culture.

The day ended underground, in the awe-inspiring Cueva de Nerja, where caves and dramatic rock formations left everyone speechless — ¡impresionante!

By January 29th, it was time for a final celebration.

Back at Sunny View School, followed by a lively flamenco workshop, the students discovered the rhythm and passion of Spain. Clapping hands, stamping feet, and moving to the music — everyone found their inner dancer.

And then, all too soon, it was time to say hasta luego.

On January 30th, the group returned home — tired, yes, but filled with new confidence, friendships, and memories that will last far beyond the classroom.

This was more than just a trip.

It was a journey into language, culture, and connection — a week where Spanish was not just learned, but truly lived.
