Exploring Science in Depth: Science Day at BCS
At Berlin Cosmopolitan School, science education is more than a subject — it is a commitment.
As a proud MINT school, BCS places a strong emphasis on Mathematics, Informatics, Natural Sciences, and Technology, creating meaningful opportunities for students to explore, question, and experiment. The annual Science Day for Grade 10 is a powerful example of this approach in action.
Why Science Days Matter
From a pedagogical perspective, days like these are essential.
They allow students to step beyond the structure of regular lessons and immerse themselves deeply in a subject area. This kind of focused, hands-on experience enables students to better understand not only the content, but also the methods and ways of thinking that define each scientific discipline.
At a crucial stage — just before choosing their major subjects for the Abitur or IB programme — this insight is especially valuable. It empowers students to make informed decisions based on genuine interest and experience rather than assumption.
A Day of Inquiry and Experimentation
During this year’s Science Day, Grade 10 students were divided into three groups — Biology, Physics, and Chemistry — according to the subject they are considering pursuing in the upper secondary years.
Over the course of a full day, each group conducted experiments, collected and analysed data, and presented their findings in a scientific lab report.
Physics: Investigating Motion and Measurement
The Physics group investigated how the period of a simple pendulum depends on its length.
By carefully measuring oscillations at different string lengths, students explored the relationship between theory and experiment. They also examined the limits of the small-angle approximation by testing larger angles, reflecting critically on the assumptions behind the model and identifying possible sources of error.
Chemistry: Reaction Rates and Green Chemistry
In Chemistry, students focused on reaction rates within the context of green chemistry.
Using everyday, environmentally friendly substances such as citric acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate, they explored how temperature affects the speed of a chemical reaction. Through systematic experimentation at different temperatures, students collected and interpreted data, gaining insight into both chemical processes and sustainable laboratory practices.
Biology: Cellular Respiration in Focus
The Biology group turned their attention to cellular respiration, investigating how temperature influences the rate of this vital process in soybeans.
Using carbon dioxide sensors, students followed a scientific protocol before designing their own extensions of the experiment by selecting additional temperatures to test. This combination of guided and independent inquiry strengthened both their practical skills and their scientific reasoning.
Learning Like Scientists
Science Day at BCS once again demonstrated how powerful learning can be when students are given the time and space to truly engage with a subject.
By experimenting, analysing, and thinking like scientists, they not only deepen their understanding — they also take an important step towards discovering their own academic path.
