Our Abitur Art Class: At Maurizio Cattelan’s “NIGHT”

Our Grade 11 Abitur Bildende Kunst Grundkurs students were very lucky with the timing: Maurizio Cattelan’s exhibition “NIGHT” coincided perfectly with their current project on conceptual art.

Last week, the class visited the Neue Nationalgalerie together with Ms. Clough.

Having researched the development of conceptual art and discussed some of its central questions in class beforehand, the students arrived well prepared.

Rather than looking for simple answers, they approached the exhibition with curiosity and their own questions.

In front of the artworks, they discussed, challenged one another’s ideas, and developed their thinking further. It was an opportunity to practise critical thinking directly in front of the works themselves – especially where art refuses to offer an easy answer.

The students will now use the experiences and insights gained during the museum visit to shape their upcoming artworks.
