Our Abitur students had the exceptional opportunity to attend the world premiere of the new POLAR EXPERIENCE at Arena Berlin—just one day before the immersive exhibition officially opened to the public. The visit offered a unique blend of scientific insight, emotional storytelling, and cutting-edge technology, making it a perfect learning experience for our students.
From the moment they arrived, students were welcomed with a powerful message that shaped the entire experience:

“What we know about the world determines who we are, but what we ask determines what we will be.”

A Powerful Beginning: Encounter with Yaari Walker

The tour began with a deeply moving encounter with Yaari Walker, St. Lawrence Island Yupik. Through singing, drumming, and storytelling, she introduced students to the wisdom and traditions of Alaska’s Indigenous communities. She shared cultural concepts such as “Masing”—a term for a good-spirited human that has no equivalent in English—and encouraged students to reflect on their own role in protecting the planet.

Entering the Exhibition: Science Meets Immersion

After this introduction, students entered the multimedia exhibition, where the POLAR EXPERIENCE masterfully combines advanced technology with real scientific research. The immersive format allowed them to explore the polar regions not just intellectually, but emotionally and sensorially.
One of the highlights was a virtual expedition aboard the research vessel Polarstern, guided by Prof. Dr. Markus Rex, Head of Atmospheric Research at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut. His explanations helped students understand the global significance of polar research, the fragility of our planet’s ecosystems, and the urgent need to protect them.

Connecting with BCS Values: Knowledge as a Pathway to Protection

The POLAR EXPERIENCE is especially valuable for our school community because it provides young people with a deeper understanding of the Earth’s climate, its flora and fauna, and the interconnected systems that sustain life. This aligns with our conviction: You can only protect what you know.
BCS has placed this belief at the heart of its educational approach—most notably through our forest education programme, in which students learn directly in nature every week. Experiences like the POLAR EXPERIENCE complement this hands-on learning by expanding students’ perspectives, helping them understand global ecological systems, and strengthening their sense of responsibility toward the environment.

Highlights and Special Moments

A special moment came when COSMO, the mascot of Galileo Kids, unexpectedly joined our own Cosmo group from Berlin Cosmopolitan School on their journey through the exhibition—much to the students’ delight.
At the end of the visit, students were invited to leave their personal wishes for the future on a large illustrated tree. This symbolic act encouraged them to think about the world they want to help create—and how their own decisions, questions, and actions can shape that future.

Looking Ahead

This premiere visit will certainly not be our last. We are already planning to bring more students to the POLAR EXPERIENCE in the coming weeks so they too can explore this remarkable fusion of science, culture, and climate research.
