BCS Students Dive into Climate Action and Biodiversity Research in the USA

From the bustling streets of New Orleans to the serene shores of Biloxi Bay, a group of Grade 9 and 10 students from Berlin Cosmopolitan School (BCS) recently embarked on an unforgettable learning adventure.
Led by their teacher Chris Carter, the students traveled to Camp Wilkes in Biloxi, Mississippi, to deepen their understanding of climate change and biodiversity — and to take real action.
The trip, which ran from July 4th to July 12th, was far more than just a class outing. It was an immersive exploration of nature, science, and culture, made possible through the invaluable support of Max and Brenden at Pocacito, dedicated educators from Mississippi State University, the German Foreign Office, and BCS itself.

Students spent their days fully engaged in hands-on environmental activities. From kayaking through coastal waters and exploring the landscape by drone to seine-haul fishing, beach cleanups, and planting marsh grasses, every task brought them closer to understanding the ecosystems they were working to protect. One of the highlights was the focus on biomimicry — discovering how nature’s time-tested solutions can inspire innovative ways to address modern environmental challenges.
Beyond fieldwork, the program offered students a rich blend of cultural exchange, language practice, and shared meals. Together with local educators and international partners, the students participated in lectures and experiments that drove home the urgency of fighting climate change and safeguarding biodiversity.
Their journey began fittingly on July 4th with a vibrant street party on Canal Street in New Orleans — a moment of cultural immersion that set the tone for the days to come. It ended on a peaceful morning by Biloxi Bay, with students reflecting on what they had learned and the friendships they had forged.
“This experience was enriching, sometimes challenging, and always eye-opening. I’m incredibly proud of how resilient, open-minded, and curious our students were every single day. They came home with new knowledge, skills, and a deeper commitment to protecting our planet.”
said Chris Carter.
BCS extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this extraordinary learning experience possible — and looks forward to seeing these young changemakers put their lessons into action at home and beyond.
