Bridging Cultures: An Unforgettable Week in Málaga
From January 31 to February 7, our Grade 9 students from Berlin Cosmopolitan School embarked on an unforgettable cultural adventure in Málaga, Spain. This immersive experience allowed them to explore the rich history, vibrant traditions, and stunning landscapes of the Andalusian region while staying with host families.
Our journey began with a warm welcome at Málaga Airport, followed by an exploration of the city’s historic gems, including the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle, offering breathtaking views over the city. Students had their first taste of Spanish cuisine before meeting their host families in La Cala del Moral, where they would experience true Spanish hospitality.
The weekend was packed with exciting activities. On Saturday, we took a guided bike tour through Málaga, discovering its lively streets and landmarks, followed by a visit to the Picasso Museum, honoring the city’s most famous artist. We ended the day with a classic Spanish treat – chocolate and churros at the iconic Casa Aranda. Sunday was dedicated to integration with host families, allowing students to deepen their cultural immersion.
Monday and Wednesday provided valuable exchange experiences at Colegio El Pinar in Alhaurín de la Torre, where our students connected with local peers, participated in school activities, and practiced their Spanish. Additionally, we explored Málaga’s vibrant cultural scene, with visits to the Pompidou Museum and the Museum of Popular Arts and Customs, as well as iconic sites like Plaza de la Constitución and La Malagueta Beach.
Tuesday was an absolute highlight! We ventured into the Andalusian countryside to visit a centennial olive grove, where students participated in a hands-on workshop to prepare salmorejo and Spanish tortilla, followed by a visit to the spectacular Nerja Caves and some free time in the picturesque town of Nerja.
On Thursday, we took a hike around Cala del Moral to Forestal El Cantal Park, before returning to Málaga’s city center for a cultural walk and a visit to the historic Cine Albéniz. In the afternoon, students embraced the passion of Flamenco through an exciting workshop at Escuela La Playa, followed by a farewell gathering at a local shopping center.
As our trip came to an end, we said goodbye to Málaga with wonderful memories, deeper cultural understanding, and a newfound appreciation for Spain’s rich heritage. This experience was more than just a trip—it was a journey of learning, connection, and adventure.
A heartfelt thank you to our host families, our local coordinator Antonia, and everyone who made this trip an incredible success. ¡Hasta la próxima, Málaga!
