A Day in the Forest: Grade 6 Students Share Their Experiences

What happens when a whole school day takes place under the trees instead of inside a classroom? Our Grade 6 students at Berlin Cosmopolitan School spend one day each week in the forest in Prenden – and in the Future Education Podcast the host Nadezhda Mikova talks with the students about how this unique experience changes the way they learn, live, and connect with nature.
From building shelters, carving wood, and swimming in the lake, to silent forest walks and overnight camping trips, the students share what makes these days so special. They talk about “tree friends” they visit each week, the freedom of learning in an open environment, and how the forest helps them feel calmer, healthier, and more focused.
One student reflects: “The nature belongs to humans and humans belong to the nature. We don’t have to fight against it – we are part of it.” Another explains how being trusted with tools like hatchets and knives helped them feel respected and capable.
The stories are both inspiring and moving: how fears of darkness or animals transformed into fascination, how teamwork in nature made group projects more meaningful, and how spending time outdoors deepened their sense of responsibility for protecting the environment.
