Grade 9 English drama workshop
On the last days of school before the winter break, grade 9 English stepped into the world of drama during a workshop with Ms. Kelly. Students warmed up with a playful mix of imaginative and movement-based exercises before diving into Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, which they have just finished reading.
Focusing on the final act of the play, students explored power dynamics between characters, using height and distance to show shifting relationships, reflecting on characters’ motivations, and capturing pivotal moments through freeze frames. This opened up conversations about the characters’ inner conflicts and the emotional weight of their decisions.
What also made the afternoon special was the way students engaged with the text. Themes of integrity, fear, and responsibility – central to The Crucible – felt immediate and personal when explored through the body as well as the mind.
