Media-based project work in Year 10

At Berlin Cosmopolitan School, we take an innovative and practical approach to media-based project work (mPA): instead of traditional exams, we actively involve students in the learning process. The aim is not only to deepen their subject knowledge, but also to promote important skills such as research skills, self-management, communication and social skills.

Structure of the project work

The project is divided into three equal parts:

  1. Practical work or written report: Learners select a project from one of their Year 10 subjects and implement it as creative, practical work. Projects must be realistic and formulated using SMART criteria to ensure successful implementation.
  2. Presentation: The results will be presented at the Project Exhibition, followed by scientific presentations in early June.
  3. Reflection: Finally, the pupils write a reflection in which they analyse their work process, challenges and learning successes.

Each piece of work is assessed equally and contributes 20% to the overall mark for the subject in question.

Support and mentoring

During the project, learners are given two lessons per week to work on their projects. Subject teachers act as mentors, accompanying the entire process and providing support with planning, implementation and time management. In addition, the middle school coordination team serves as a permanent point of contact.

Creativity and innovation

Our project work is characterised by the targeted use of innovative media and technologies. This gives students access to modern gadgets such as hologram machines, augmented and mixed reality technologies, HoloLens and the pet bot “Loona”, which they can incorporate into their projects. By choosing to produce practical work, we encourage creative solutions and individual research in every subject area.

Sustainable learning process

The projects not only promote individual learning, but also strengthen the school community: learners work together in different areas of the school, initiate fundraisers to finance projects and develop skills that are useful far beyond school.

With this innovative approach, BCS optimally prepares its students for future academic and professional challenges while promoting creativity, personal responsibility and media literacy.
