Abitur
At the end of the last two years of Secondary School (grade 12), students may take the exams for the German Abitur.
The two years of upper Secondary School consist of a qualification phase and the final exams at the end of grade 12. The general performance, which is achieved in the qualification phase (grades 11 and 12) as well as the grade earned in the Abitur examination form the final Secondary School grade.
In grades 11 and 12 students choose between different basic and advanced courses, therefore a classical homeroom setting no longer exists.
All courses must meet the educational guidelines of the State of Berlin.
Students of higher Secondary School select their courses from three main subject areas. The first area consisting of languages, the second of social science subjects such as history and geography and the third of mathematical and scientific subjects such as mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry.
The final examinations of the German Abitur at the end of the 12th grade consist of three written tests, an oral examination and the so-called fifth test component. The fifth test component may consist of a "particular achievement" or a presentation in form of a written exam.
The curriculum at upper Secondary School level at BCS is bilingual, which means it is either taught in English or German. The same applies to the Abitur itself, as subjects that were taught in English in the qualifying phase will also be reviewed in English in the final Abitur examination.
